Christ, the Living Bread

Scripture for Meditation: John 6:51

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

Hymn of Supplication: Christ, Be My Glory

(Tune of “Be Thou My Vision”)

Christ, be my ransom; redeem me, I pray. Purchase God's pardon, for I cannot pay.
God had been angry but now smiles on me;
His wrath, though righteous, is canceled by Thee.

Christ, be my wisdom, the light of my mind; Shine in my thinking, else I would be blind. Grant me the faith and the insight to see Truth in its rad'ance embodied in Thee.

Christ, be my manna, O Life-bread Divine; Work through my weakness that honor be Thine. Fortify, feed me; I faint, and I fall.
Nourish Thy servant, Sustainer of All!

Christ, be my glory, the praiseworthy One; Through Thee God saves me and names me a son. No more of Satan, his offspring, defiled,
I am adopted, in Christ made God's child!

Prayer of Blessing

Responsive Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat

what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live;

and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

Hymn of Longing: How Sweet and Awful Is the Place

How sweet and awful is the place
With Christ within the doors,
While everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores!

While all our hearts and all our songs
Join to admire the feast
Each of us cry with thankful tongues
“Lord, why was I a guest?”

“Why was I made to hear Thy voice
And enter while there’s room
When thousands make a wretched choice
And rather starve than come?”

’Twas the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly drew us in;
Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

Pity the nations, O our God,
Constrain the earth to come;
Send Thy victorious Word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.

We long to see Thy churches full,
That all the chosen race
May with one voice, and heart, and soul,
Sing Thy redeeming grace.

What is our hope in life and death?
Christ alone, Christ alone.
What is our only confidence?
That our souls to him belong.

Who holds our days within his hand?
What comes apart from his command?
And what will keep us to the end?
The love of Christ in which we stand.

Chorus:
O sing hallelujah! Our hope springs eternal.
O sing hallelujah! Now and ever we confess:
Christ our hope in life and death.

What truth can calm the troubled soul?
God is good, God is good.
Where is his grace and goodness known?
In our great Redeemer's blood
Who holds our faith when fears arise?
Who stands above the stormy trial?
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh unto the shore,
The rock of Christ?

Chorus:
O sing hallelujah! Our hope springs eternal.
O sing hallelujah! Now and ever we confess:
Christ our hope in life and death.

Unto the grave, what will we sing?
Christ, He lives! Christ, he lives!
And what reward will heaven bring?
Everlasting life with him.
There we will rise to meet the Lord;
Then sin and death will be destroyed.
And we will feast in endless joy,
When Christ is ours forevermore.

Chorus:
O sing hallelujah! Our hope springs eternal.
O sing hallelujah! Now and ever we confess:
Christ our hope in life and death.
(repeat)

Now and ever we confess:
Christ our hope in life and death.
