Christ, Our Feast

Scripture for Meditation: John 7:14-17

About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.”

Hymn of Thirst: Jesus, Strong and Kind

Jesus said that if I thirst
I should come to him;
No one else can satisfy.
I should come to him.

Jesus said if I am weak
I should come to him;
No one else can be my strength.
I should come to him.

Chorus:
For the Lord is good and faithful;
He will keep us day and night.
We can always run to Jesus,
Jesus, strong and kind.

Jesus said that if I fear
I should come to him;
No one else can be my shield.
I should come to him.

Chorus

Jesus said if I am lost
He will come to me,
And he showed me on that cross
He will come to me.

Chorus 2x:

Jesus, strong and kind.

Scripture for Meditation: Isaiah 25:6, 9

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. . . . It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Responsive Reading: Nehemiah 8:5,6, 14, 15, 18; 9:1, 3, 15, 19, 20

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered,

“Amen, Amen,”

lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. . . . And they found it written in the Law that the Lord had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem,

Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” . . .

And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule. . . . Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads. . . . And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day;

for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the Lord their God. . . .

“You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them. . . . You in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst.”

Assurance of Pardon: John 7:37, 38

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

Response: Thanks be to God.
