Sunday Meditation, November 29

The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity—hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory—because at the Father’s will Jesus Christ became poor and was born in a stable so that thirty years later he might hang on a cross. It is the most wonderful message that the world has ever heard, or will hear.

Learn much of the Lord Jesus. For every look at yourself take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely. Such infinite majesty, and yet such meekness and grace, and all for sinners, even the chief. Live much in the smiles of God. Bask in his beams. Feel his all-seeing eye settled on you in love. And repose in his almighty arms.... Let your soul be filled with a heart-ravishing sense of the sweetness and excellency of Christ and all that is in Him.

Why sola Scriptura? Because God alone is the source and standard of truth. Why soli Deo Gloria? Because God alone deserves and demands all of our worship, adoration, and praise. Why sola gratia, sola fide, and solus Christus? Because it is only by God’s sovereign grace that our empty hands of faith receive the Savior who meets our every need in his life, death, and resurrection.

Sunday Meditation, October 11

It is not our littleness that hinders Christ; but our bigness. It is not our weakness that hinders Christ; it is our strength. It is not our darkness that hinders Christ; it is our supposed light that holds back his hand. It is easier to save us from our sins than from our righteousnesses. Our self-righteousness is that hideous boa constrictor which seems to coil itself round and round our spirit, and to crush out of us all the life that would receive the gospel of the grace of God. He that thinks that he knows will never learn. He that is blind and thinks that he sees will remain contented in the darkness all his life long.

Sunday Meditation, October 4

The world is starving for a yearning love, a love that remembers instead of forsakes. A love that isn’t tied to our loveliness. A love that gets down underneath our messiness. A love that is bigger than the enveloping darkness we might be walking through even today. A love of which even the very best human romance is the faintest of whispers.

A Night of Prayer and Praise

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave.
He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave.
Is He worthy? Is He worthy Of all blessing and honor and glory?
Is He worthy of this?
He is.

Sunday Meditation, September 27

This is an important message for the church in our time, when halfhearted commitment is so common. Jesus made it clear in his teaching: “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). Those who play games with Jesus and his word are not truly “disciples,” and we must question whether or not they were true believers. Those who think Jesus meant that we are “free” to pursue whatever dreams we want are sadly mistaken. Rather, we are free to follow God.
